We told you that the Pleasanton Lions Club CPRA Rodeo was going to be stacked with NFR Qualifiers…and it was! Take a look at the results below. My favorite highlight was the stellar tie-down roping in Saturday night’s performance. The 2013 PRCA Tie-down Roping Rookie of the Year and 2013 NFR Qualifier, Caleb Smidt, wowed the crowd with a 7.52 second run. However, the very next run was made by eight time PRCA World Champion Fred Whitfield. Whitfield “answered the bell” and put a 7.19 second run on the board to win the event.
In the bareback riding, Tony Tharp, the number two ranked rider in the CPRA was able to climb the standings. Tharp won the event with a 79 point ride on Diamond Cross Rodeo’s 082 “Cracker Barrel” and the number one man, Jake Brown, bucked off of 413 “Second Chance.” The steer wrestling win was split by NFR regular Matt Reeves and Jacob Schofner-each knocking out 4.2 second runs.
The breakaway ropers came to Pleasanton with speed on their mind-five of the six paying places were under three seconds. Samantha Chick’s 2.57 second run edged out four other standout cowgirls who managed to stay under the three second mark: Whitney Thurmond, Mandi Jo Fox, Lauren Bane and JJ Hampton.
Diamond Cross Rodeo’s 426 “Bear Sign” showed just how great he is on Saturday night-taking Dustin Fox to the pay window with an 80 point ride. Cord Crowell and his partner: NFR Qualifier Brett Beach won the team roping with a 4.73. This was a dominant performance that eclipsed second place by over one-half of a second.
The barrel race was won on Friday night-Crystal Evans posted a 17.349 and never relinquished the lead. There were only three points separating first and third place in the bull riding, but young gun Tristan Mize prevailed with his 81 point ride on Diamond Cross Rodeo’s “Preacher Man.” Pistol Preece was a close second with 80 points on “Coal Digger” and Lane Nobles was 79 points on his Friday night ride.
