I got to work with Chris Mathis several years ago when I did a great deal of work for Sonny Arocha’s C4 Productions. Chris was passionate about the business and if you met him once-you would have never forgotten him. Here’s a story I remember about Chris:
Chris was in Brandie Franco Flores’ wedding a few years ago and he forgot to go to the dry cleaners to pick up his pants. He ended up borrowing a pair from Gerber Rojas-a Costa Rican bull rider that was living in the area at the time. Chris wasn’t terribly tall, but Gerber was definitely a horse jockey candidate-he was about four feet tall on a good day. No one at that wedding will forget the “high waters” that Chris was wearing with his trademark tennis shoes.
The passage below was written by Brandie Franco Flores.
We lost a very special person recently that saddens me tonight but also gives me peace that I know god has him in his hands upstairs in some arena lookin down at all of us. So I sat down and started writing . Chris Mathis we love you and Im honored to of had you as my friend:
YOU COULD SEE A LOT, WHEN YOU LOOKED INTO THIS COWBOYS EYES.
YOU SEE ALL THE BULLS, THAT HAVE PASSED THRU HIS HANDS.
WEATHER IT WAS PULLING FLANKS, OR PULLING GATES.
YOU WERE GOING TO THE BANK.
THIS OL’COWBOY SURELY LOVED THIS GAME.
THE SWEAT, THE PAIN, AND THE TEARS
THIS OL’COWBOY, SHARED NO FEARS.
WITH HIS FAITHFUL DOG BY HIS SIDE,
YOU COULD ALWAYS, SEE THE LIGHT IN HIS EYES.
THIS COWBOY’S MIND IS PLAQUED WITH TIME
HIS VISION OF BEAUTY, WAS TO SEE HIS BULL ,
JUST MAKE THAT 8 SECOND RIDE.
ALL HE WANTED WAS TO PUT A GOOD SHOW
HE NEVER EXPECTED PAY, AT THE END OF THE DAY.
HE WAS JUST BLESSED
BECAUSE GOD LET HIM STAY,
HE ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD,
A COWBOY WOULD PAY.
WE WILL MISS YOU MY FRIEND.
